Our Work

In January 2023, The University of Texas - Austin, CAMPO, Texas Department of Transportation, the City of Austin, and Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority entered a partnership for Texas SMARTTrack, to bring together diverse resources to realize the benefit of emerging transportation technologies to our transportation system.

Located on The University of Texas Pickle Research Campus (PRC), testing and collaboration is already underway with industry partners while the permanent facility is being planned and constructed.

Facility

1

Tier 1

Tier 1 is a closed course for testing edge cases and scenarios that cannot be executed on public roads. This will facilitate evaluation of devices in the alpha stage of development.

2

Tier 2

Tier 2 is designed for research and testing that does not pose a risk for public roadway users. Several portions of the existing roads on PRC are being evaluated to best represent test scenarios.

3

Tier 3

Tier 3 moves testing to public roadways owned by the City of Austin, TxDOT, CTRMA, and others. Texas SMARTTrack will install sensors and communication devices along the roads used in Tier 3 to stream data into a centralized research facility at PRC.
